Is there a way to turn OFF automatic backup and still use encryption?

I just got a WD My Passport for Mac.

I would like to use the software SuperDuper to back up my Mac while still using the encryption cabability in SmartWare.

Is there a way to turn OFF automatic backup and still use encryption?

 UPDATE:

I figured out a solution (I think):

In SmartWare, under Settings > Set Up Drive > Security , I set up a password.

Then, under Settings > Set Up Software >  Preferences , I unchecked “Open WD SmartWare when drive is connected”.

Now when I plug in my drive, the WD Unlocker (a folder containing DriveUnlock and an Extras folder) appears. I open the WD Unlocker folder and double-click on DriveUnlock. I am prompted to enter my password, and then the  drive appears on my desktop WITHOUT running SmartWare opening and automatically backing up my computer. (Note: I can also choose “Unlock Drive” from the menubar icon to bring up the password prompt.)

Am I correct in assuming that SmartWare will now never open and automatically backup my drive as long as I keep the above-mentioned settings intact?

You are correct. You can also uninstall Smartware if you want. The unlocker will run regardless of the Smartware been installed or not.
