Is there a solution for these external drives yet?

I purchased a 1.5TB My Book drive a few weeks ago, backed up some of my files from my MacBook Pro, then a few days later the new firmware was downloaded and installed.  Biggest mistake so far… no matter what I try, this drive will not show up on my system anymore, and it looks likes there are a large number of people having similar problems.

Have any solutions for these problems been released or explained yet? Or are there any in the works?

I would normally return the drive and exchange it, but there are files on the drive that I need to transfer.  This is my 4th WD external drive, and none of the previous ones have given me any problems.  It only appears that such issues have appeared once this SmartWare software appeared.

Any ideas on how to fix this would be appreciated.


  1. Which drive do you have from below link?

  2. What OS are you using 10.6 or 10.5 or 10.4?

  3. Which Interface (1394 Firewire or USB)?

  4. Can you see your drive using Disk Utility?

  5. Does it show up on System profiler?

Once I have more info, I maybe able to help.


I have a My Book Essential 1.5TB, using OS 10.6, USB.

The drive doesn’t show up in Disk Utility or System profiler.
