Is the WDC WD1001FALS-00J7B0 a noisy drive? Could mine be defective?

Hello Community,

I recently (about 2 months ago) installed a WDC WD1001FALS-00J7B0 into my 24in aluminum iMac. At first, everything seemed fine but now I’m not sure if I could have a defective drive or maybe my OS is just acting up.

The problem I have is that the drive seems be be pretty loud and there are times when I get quite a delay in action (beach ball spins for 5-10 seconds, then comp responds). Also, the drive just starts to access itself at times for around 30 seconds when using my browser. It’s like it’s seeking for something but I haven’t opened up new apps and I’m not running anything intensive. I have 4 GB of RAM, so don’t think it’s using the drive for additional RAM area.

When I say pretty loud, I mean I can definitely hear clicking from the drive. My comp is about 2.5 feet away but it is still quite noticeable. For the mac folks out there, I’ve run disk utility from the DVD as well as Diskwarrior, and all comes back OK.

So what are your thoughts? Does it sound like my drive could be defective? I just have this gut feeling that everything is not working as it should.
