Is my EHDD dead?

So recently I just started to use my WD1600U017-003 again for storing files when dropping the files into it, it was either slow writing or becomes unresponsive and did a WinDlg on it. This is what I got.

06-Quick Test on drive 2 did not complete! Status code = 07 (Failed read test element), Failure Checkpoint = 73 (Unknown Test) SMART self-test did not complete on drive 2!

Is my EHDD dead or is there a attempt to save it?

*Note: Luckily I backed up my files onto my Desktop earlier so no files are in harms way.

Can I assume that this is an older drive, not under warranty? If so (and RMA is not possible), you might try using WinDLG to write zeros to it and reformat it. In fact, just doing a full (not quick) format would probably have about the same effect. I would not trust it for anything critical, though. Good on ya for backing up your stuff!

Yeah the EHDD is about 6-7 years old atleast. I checked the warranty and it said expired in 2007. So I just decided to buy a new EHDD soon as this one is way too old.

I just “Write Zero” - Quick Format because the Full Format was 8 hours which is too much to spend time on. Then decided to reformat it through Disk Management. It still writes and read, but I am not going to risk the probability of it dying on me with files on it so I will keep it in “storage”. I do appreciate your help.

The HDD is failing, but depending on the nature of the failure it may still be usable, but in this situation I just remove the magnets from the drive and toss the rest

If you do want to continue using it for non-critical things you do not want to write zeroes, you want to full it up with data, probably twice (full it up, delete the stuff, full it up again). If it takes forever the drive is beyond saving…
