Is Data LifeGuard relevant for external WD hard drives?

I’m having a bit of a problem in that my new external 3TB hard drive is failing it’s SMART tests.  I’m getting random ‘unknown’ errors, but a constant error in the ‘raw read error rate’  I don’t really understand what’s going on, so can anyone help me on this.  The drive has been partitioned and is working perfectly as far as I can see.

As an aside, the technician at the computer house I bought it from has stated (and I quote) “My suspicion is that the software was designed for internal drives and is not an effective test of external drives.”  How true do you think that statement is?

Thanks for all your help in advance.

George
