Is the internal HDD replaceable if/and when it fails after the 3year warranty or will it become a paper weight?

(No, because WD has to put the Linux NAS OS image on the drive.)

That’s what I figured. Kind of blows. But at least it comes with 3 years warranty.

Can the drive be imaged so that I can save a copy before failure and use it to retore using a new HDD?

Catch 22.  The MBL’s case is designed to snap shut easily but not open.  If you open the case you void the warranty.  Bad situation.  WD’s policy is that the data on the product is the owners responsibility out-right.  So if WD’s firmware update bricks your MBL then good-bye  to your files.  :cry:
