Installation

Hi,

I just received a new G drive USB-C for use in a MacBook Pro. Although I have several G drives somehow I can’t remember how to use a new one? Are there instructions anywhere? When I plug it in Time Machine says it can’t fine the disk. Am I supposed to format the disk in disc utilities or are there instructions for how install? Thanks
