Initial 3 HDDs in RAID 5 and adding a 4th HDD later?

Hi all. I have been reading a lot of topics in both EX4 and EX4100 forums and the web itself but I haven’t found a single 100% sure answer - so here’s my query:

I am considering purchasing an empty WD EX4100 enclosure and buy the HDDs seperately - yup it turns out cheaper that way here.

So I will start off by purchasing 3 x 4TB WD Red HDDs and will set up in a RAID 5 configuration. When it will be needed I will purchase a 4th 4TB WD Red HDD and will add to 4th empty bay. So to the question - will I be able to expand my RAID 5 set up with it automatically reparsing and rebuilding the data across the four HDDs without me having to reformat or loss my data on the initial 3 HDDs?

Thanks for any help provided!

Hi there and welcome to the WD community.

You should be able to add a 4th drive when you go to the dashboard under storage you should be able to see an option that lets you expand the volume or migrate.

Yay thank you for your reply. This is definitely helpful

I’m now thinking of getting 2 x 6TB WD Red HDDs and configure them to RAID 1 and when the times comes, get the 3rd and migrate to RAID 5.

Note: I haven’t tested the suggestion
