Incorrect Capacity in Windows after MyBook Duo Drive Replacement

Hello,

I have a MyBook Duo external back-up drive that originally came with two 4TB drives. I run it as RAID 1 (mirrored). When one of the drives failed, I replaced it with a 6TB version. Yes, I do realize that the manual states:

“Also, replacement drives must be new, and the same capacity as the drive that failed. The RAID configurations require both drives to be the same capacity. Using any other hard drive or capacity voids the warranty for your My Book Duo device.”

However, in practice, MyBook worked just fine with a 4/6TB combination as a 4TB RAID 1.

I have now replaced the remaining 4TB drive with another 6TB version for a 6/6 RAID 1. MyBook mirrored the data with no issues and both drives are healthy. WD Drive Utilities shows 10.92 TB at the top of the GUI. However, Windows still thinks the drive is 3.63TB. Disk Management shows a single 3725.87 GB NTFS partition. No unformatted partitions or anything else show up.

How can I get Windows to recognize the increased capacity?

Thank you in advance!

Hi,

You should try contacting WD’s Technical Support about this for live assistance and troubleshooting:

Thank you for your response, Neha. I wrote to WD’s Tech Support shortly after posting the message here. They got back to me the next day asking for screen shots, which I have provided. I have not heard anything since… :frowning:

Received a response from WD Support:

Please be informed that as per the serial number WUA264701514 you are holding an 8 TB drive and it is not compatible with the 12 TB internal disk.

So, basically, the enclosures are software locked to the original capacity or less and cannot be upgraded when the drives die. This is obviously a d**k move intended to force customers to buy another drive/enclosure package from WD when they need extra capacity. I guess they don’t really see the irony in achieving exactly the opposite – I will never even consider a WD enclosure in the future.
