How to work with multiple computers and a single My passport essential

I am having a 320 GB My passport essential which i am connecting frequently to 2 machines for data backup purpose .

Here comes the problem:

I am not able to access the data directly  in a smooth fashion from my OS ( Vista and Win7 ) and if i need to copy a backed up file to some new machine , i need to search it first in the OS directory system otherwise go for WD Smartware installtion and then RETRIEVING the data which i feel very cumbersome whereas in many other storage medias ( ext. hard drives ) it simly can be done by copy paste .

Also when backing up the data via the WD smartware : teh speed is very LOW even though the check Box under Backup Speed is unchecked. It takes almost 20 minutes for a 800MB file to get backed up ( with a 4GB RAM Intel Core2 Duo system )

I would request for helping me on this front.
