How to use a My Book Essential as a big flash drive?

I bought a 1TB WD My Book Essential and I want to use it as a massive flash drive where I can store files but I can’t figure out how to use it. The built-in software is clunky and impossible to figure out. I’m on a Mac running Snow Leopard, 10.6.8. If anyone could help that’d be fantastic.

The user guide that came with it shows this…

…but it’s not showing up on my desktop. And the built-in software is simply worthless.

First I believe the drive comes formatted for Windows and will be read only for Mac. You can reformatt for Mac if you only want to use in Macs. If you want to use on Mac and Windows checkout this thread http://community.wdc.com/t5/External-Drives-for-Mac/can-my-passport-for-mac-transfer-files-onto-another-mac-or-pc/m-p/216722#M3474 I think that will solve your problem. Remember never trust important to just one drive. Make sure youhave at least 2 copies.

Yeah I only want to use it for Macs, but how do I reformat it like you said?
