How to restore a WD DX4000 in RAID 5 with 0xD9 error?

What does it say on the DX4000’s front panel display?

Are both the DX4000 and the Win10 computer connected to the same in home network?

If the Win10 computer is connected via WiFi, it may be on a different subnet and so it can’t find the DX4000. If possible, try connecting the Win10 computer to the same network via Ethernet cable. Be sure to disable the WiFi connection when you connect via Ethernet, as the WD recovery software doesn’t tolerate multiple network connections on the machine it’s running on.

B.

the front of the dx4000 says
Startup
Failed: 0xD9

my windows 10 is on a Ethernet cable and so is my DX4000 on the same router and network and wifi is off (good thinking I thought the same thing)

But I did notice my hp ProBook 650 does not have USB 2.0 ports it only has USB 3.0 port? So I believe I have to do it on my windows 7 machine…?

I was able to get “INITIALIZING OK LOADING RECOVERY” and then when I let go of the reset button I got Storage Bad?

image

Now, when you first ran the setup from the mounted .iso file, did you choose “recreate my storage”, or “perform a recovery”?

If you went straight to “perform a recovery”, that won’t work. You have to do the “recreate my storage” first.

Sorry, I see that the WD instructions don’t mention that.

B.

so I was able to get it to recovery started…

now I just need to stay on top of this thing lol… wow only 48hrs deep on this DX4000

Hai…i’m already followed step by step to recreate storage but still failed to recreate…please help me because I don’t know what’s wrong

Can u tell me how i want to know the drives have been damaged??please help me

Sorry for coming back so late in the discussion as the author of the original message.

For those who have lost data on the WD Sentinel DX4000 and need to recover them, we offer data recovery service for it, whichever the type of RAID. We did a successful data recovery for the DX4000 which was running in RAID 5 (as well as several other RAID systems, from Western Digital and other brands.)
http://www.sosdonnees.ch/en/raid-data-recovery

We can recover data even if some of the hard drives in the system have problems (e.g. one hard drive with bad sectors or worse problem like mechanical ones.). For the DX4000, we can be especially efficient as we already treated this case.

To avoid any overwriting on data, --altough the system is stored on a separate partition than the RAID-5 data area-- we advise not reinstalling the system.

Concerning the reinstall of the system, this may be considered in a second step after the data recovery.
(N.B. We didn’t try doing it up to the end, but we still could try as we have the DX4000 NAS.)

Hi all,
My situation : DX4000 4 x 2 Tb drives in Raid5 and now the 0xD9 error…

My first question is how long does the ‘Recreate my storage’ step usually take ? It has been going over 12 hours - still flashing blue power light and message : Initialising OK, Loading Recovery.

And second question is I only have 1 drive that is on the ‘recommended’ list - and I suspect that is the failure as it is the oldest. Is it worth persevering trying to recover the DX4000 or should I just give up on it

Thanks for any comments/responses etc…

Drives are -
WD2002FFSX-68PF8N0
WD2002FYPS-02W3B1 (this is on the list)
WD2000F9YZ-09N20L0
WD2004FBYZ-01YCBB1

Unlock is first, recreate is next, recovery is last? Recreate is like 5 mins I think and recover should be around 5 hours
Your data is gone unless you spend money on 3rd party software.

I would count my blessing it worked this long and put the drives in another brand of NAS
should be some log files on the thumb drive(s)

Hi Gramps, thanks yep this has been ticking away since mid 2013 which I suppose is a good run - I have been looking at an ASUSTOR 4004 as a newer option…

For some reason I think the Re-create step just froze up… I crashed out of it and started the Recover step with the other USB drive.

I have btw edited the WHITELISTS and WHITELISTK xml files (to avoid the ‘Bad Storage’ error from the disks) - I found details of this in another thread on here :

Anyhoo it now says : ‘Recovery Started’ on the display… see how it goes

Sorry wrong link - the xml edits are here

Update - this is now sorted. Judging by other peoples woes I think mine was (internally) probably a simple problem.
I did not have a Win7 machine - so my experience shows the 0xD9 error can be recovered with just a Win10 machine - that may be useful info for some people.

I had 2 glitches in the sequence presented by the ISO image and proposed in this thread -
(1) the first ‘Recreate Storage’ USB drive I created did not work - it hung up with message : Initialising OK, Loading Recovery. I used a different USB stick and it worked, the only difference seemed to be one file ‘encmap.xml’ in the WDRECOVERY folder - that was not on the first USB stick - but as these are boot drives it could have been something hidden.
(2) I restored from a Server Backup kept on an external drive (i.e. not a reset to factory defaults restore). This was quick but hung up at the ‘OS Loading’ message. Just shutting down with the front panel power button and then letting it boot normally brought up the same message but then it did not hang and booted back to normal operation.
The error log shows that disk 3 was reported as ‘FAILED’ in the RAID but it now shows as OK.

Good work
You do have to recreate the first thumb every time as it deletes a file when it runs. I guess they were worried someone would inadvertently boot from it again and wipe a good box?

Hi all (and esp Gramps, of course!)

Found this topic after a client’s DX400 failed with 0xD9 error. Have tried to reboot several time wit the same exact results as “SOSdonnees”, the OP of this thread.

There are no red lights on any of the drive bays, but I assume this still must be RAID issue?
Also, I am getting access denied when trying to get to http://download.wdc.com/private/PANAM_SvrRecovery_1_7_6_21.iso 862

Is there a requirement for a valid WD account requirement, or is the ISO no longer posted?

Appreciate any help or insight. We would like to attempt saving the data if possible.

Stefan

hey, that said anyone with your error has never recovered their data only able to reload a fresh machine
if you need the data you need to try raid recovery software

The 0xD9 error on a WD DX4000 indicates a disk failure in the RAID 5 array. To restore the system, you should follow these steps:

  1. Replace the failed disk with a new one of the same or higher capacity.
  2. Wait for the RAID 5 array to rebuild itself, which may take several hours or days depending on the size of the disks and the amount of data.
  3. If the array does not automatically rebuild, go into the NAS management software and initiate the rebuild process manually.
  4. If the rebuild is unsuccessful or the system still does not function properly, you may need to restore the NAS from a backup.

The 0xD9 error on a WD DX4000 NAS typically indicates a disk failure in the RAID 5 array, rather than a DHCP connection issue. Specifically, the error message “0xD9 Drive not initialized, disk may be damaged, format the disk” suggests that the system is unable to access a disk in the RAID 5 array, which may be due to physical damage or other issues.

In general, it is not necessary to connect the NAS to a router in order to boot up, as the system should be able to initialize and boot from its own internal storage. However, if you are having trouble connecting to the NAS or accessing its management interface, it is possible that there could be network issues or DHCP configuration problems that are causing the system to malfunction.

To reinstall or repair Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials on a WD DX4000 NAS, you will need a copy of the installation media and a valid license key.

The WD DX4000 should have come with a system recovery DVD, which can be used to reinstall or repair the operating system. If the owner does not have the recovery DVD, you may be able to download a copy from the WD support website.

To access the WD DX4000 NAS, you will need to connect it to your local network via an Ethernet cable and ensure that it has an IP address that can be accessed by other devices on the network. You can then use a web browser to access the management interface of the NAS, which should allow you to view any error messages or logs.

If you are unable to access the management interface of the NAS, you may need to use a client panel software such as the WD Sentinel Dashboard, which can be downloaded from the WD support website. This software allows you to manage the NAS and view system logs from a Windows computer on the same network as the NAS.

There are several tools to restore the RAID 5 data after failure, but I would recommend using the STELLAR DATA RECOVERY TECHNICIAN

To know more about how to use this software to get the desired results, I suggest you to check the below blog
# How to Recover Data from RAID 5 with 2 disk failure?
Hope this will help.

LOL, you have obviously never owned a DX4000.

The only accurate information here is you will need to try some form of raid recovery software if you want your data.

Do not attempt a WD recovery if you need your data, try some recovery software first.

It seems like you’re dealing with a complex situation involving a WD Sentinel DX4000 NAS device with RAID 5 configuration that’s encountering errors during startup. I’ll try to address your questions and provide some guidance based on the information provided. However, please note that working with RAID configurations and NAS devices can be intricate, and it’s recommended to consult with professionals who have expertise in data recovery and RAID management.

1. Correcting RAID 5 Errors: RAID 5 can tolerate the loss of one drive without data loss. However, if the XOR test is showing errors, it indicates data inconsistency or possible drive issues. You might need to identify the problematic drive(s) and potentially replace them. You could use diagnostic tools to identify issues, but it’s best to have a backup of your data before attempting any repair.

2. 0xD9 Error: The specific meaning of this error might not be easily available without detailed technical documentation from WD. It could indicate various hardware or software issues related to startup.

3. Network Connection: Network configuration should not prevent the device from starting up, as it should still be able to boot without network connectivity. However, to access the device and perform diagnostics, it might be helpful to connect it to a network.

4. Reinstalling or Repairing Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials: Reinstalling or repairing the Windows Storage Server might require the original installation media or recovery tools provided by WD. If the DX4000 came with a Windows CD or recovery options, it’s best to use those. This might involve booting from the CD or USB and selecting repair or reinstall options.

5. Accessing the DX4000: If the DX4000 is refusing to initialize, it might be difficult to access it through the usual means. Plugging in RJ45 wires and connecting to a router might not yield results if the device isn’t properly booting up. Depending on the device’s state, you might not be able to access it via client panel software either.

6. Seeking Professional Help: Given the complexities involved and the potential risk of data loss, it’s highly recommended to consult professionals or technicians who specialize in data recovery and RAID systems. They can provide tailored assistance based on the specific scenario and might have tools to recover data or repair the RAID setup.

In situations like these, where critical data is involved and technical expertise is required, seeking professional help is often the best approach to ensure that you don’t inadvertently cause further data loss or damage.
