I am a newbie in both WD Cloud and Debian. Knowing that WD Cloud can be SSH and logged in, so I tried to install a small program which needs to run with node.js in my WD Cloud. I tried to install node, npm and git by apt-get or aptitude, but no luck.
Any expert here can install node.js (v0.12.9, v4.2.4 or v5.5.0), npm and git clone successfully and function properly? If yes, pls kindly show me the command lines step by step.
On the other hand, I also tried to remove the installed packages (node.js, npm, etc.) by “Quick Restore” and “Full Restore”, but the packages are still in my WD My Cloud. Any method to remove all these packages completely?
I also cannot find any clean OS image and let me re-install the OS and clean my WD My Cloud 3T by myself. My other QNAP NAS can be cleaned completely by re-installed the OS.
Note that the version of Debain used on the v4.x firmware My Cloud’s are compiled in a non standard page size (64K I believe). This means you cannot typically use modules/programs designed for standard Debain page file versions on the My Cloud. Further doing an “apt-get” for anything on the My Cloud has the very strong potential of corrupting the firmware and causing all sorts of problems up to and including bricking the My Cloud.
Which program are you trying to run with Node.js? There maybe alternatives to it.
Removing the installed packages might be tricky especially if you’re unsure of which dependency has been updated by apt-get because removing them blindly will cause issues. Best is to update the firmware manually through the Dashboard using the latest firmware downloaded from WD.
MTV (Magic TV) is a famous brand, specially for HD TV recorders, in Hong Kong. This program acts as a Network Share Server and let the recorder record TV programs to NAS without harddisk,
I have installed successfully on my VM (Ubuntu desktop 14.04 with node.js pre-installed). It works properly!
Now, I hope to install it on my new WD My Cloud and let it run 24/7.
