How to get max performance on the EX2 Ultra - Solution

I’m looking for suggestions on how to increase the transfer speed of files between my computers and the ex2 ultra. I have the latest mycloud 5 firmware and usually see speeds between 10MBs and 60MBs. I use WD Red Pro 8TB drives and they are mirrored.

I have two PCs connected by 1GB Ethernet to the Verizon Fios router which has a 1GB ethernet connection to the device. There are no wireless links. The shares are mapped to the computers via file explorer.

I have a third WD NAS Pro 4TB that I formatted to NFTS and connected directly to my computer via USB and it usually has speeds of 250 MBs so I know the drives can handle more speed.

Any suggestions?

On EX2 Ultra I never get more than 70MBs. Reviews show 100MBs but these reviews must be sponsored.
However on WD My Book Duo connected to Windows 10 on mini PC I get 100MBs every time, so it must be limitation of EX2 Ultra .

I was able to increase my speeds to 80-100 Mb/s read and 30-70Mb/sec write. This saturates the 1GB connection and is the top speed the EX2 Ultra can perform. The actual HDDs can work faster, but the 1GB Ethernet is the clog.

My main help was buying new Ethernet cables. Before I “technically” had what I needed, 5E’s for 1GB speeds. However, when I upgraded the cables to CAT 7 I noticed a 20MB/s increase in read speeds and 10-20MB/sec write speed. This is especially helpful with long sequential read/writes. Most of my backups are in RAR format so they typically range from 250GB - 1.5TB. The new cables allowed the drive to stay at the highest speeds for the long transfers.

I have a 1GB internet connection and my remote read/writes are similar speeds. (Say, downloading a movie to my phone via Plex before a flight).

On occasion I’ll see a wired write operation going around 90MB/sec, but that’s rare. I have two WD Red Plus 8GB drives in RAID 1 to mirror the drive.

One thing to keep your eye on is your devices connection speed to your router. Even wired Ethernet speeds can vary and occasionally it will dip down to a 100MB connection. If your transfers are stuck around 10 MB/sec this is likely your issue. You can pause your transfer, reconnect to Ethernet (you can just pull the plug out and put it back in). When it’s reconnected press continue on the transfer. Cntrl +Alt + Delete will show you your Ethernet connection speed under the Performance tab.

Wired speeds are better than wireless 99.99% of the time. If you have any wireless links that are less than 1GB/sec then the lowest link speed will determine your transfer speed to the Ex2 Ultra.

If you have large files that need to be transferred you can put the files on an external drive and then connect it to the EX2 Ultra by USB. You can then max out the speed of the HDDs (Usually 250mb/sec Read/Write). This works best if you have mapped the EX2 Ultra to a PC for file explorer access.
