How to Create a Separate Backup Petition on My Book Essential External Hard Drive

I am using wdbacw0030hbk-nesn 3TB external hard drive - usb 3.0/2.0 model.  Originally I did a few backups on my Win 7 Pro desktop drive w/ no problems.  Used about 917 MB of the 3TB available.

I have since upgraded to Windows 10 Pro under the MS free upgrade program and now want to backup the same desktop PC, which has new data / files in all the same files / folders since the original backup.

I do not want to overwrite or lose the original back I have on my WD drive, so is there a way I can create a separate petition if you will on the external drive before I do the backup ???

Thanks

Hi, welcome to the community.

Did you use a software to perform the backup? If so, which software did you use?

Hello - Yes, I used the WD software that came with the external drive.

Hi, What I would do is access the drive and rename the folder that holds your backup. Lets say that the name of the folder holding the backup is called “Computer1”, I would rename it to “Computer1.old” This way when the Smartware creates the backup again, will start in a new folder that would be called “Computer1”.

Ok IIuna: I cannot see where you can re-name the existing backup nor specify a new backup name. When I did the original / only backup on the WD external drive; the choice I had was to select what folders on my PC to backup and it used the type of data backed up such as emails, documents, etc. as blocks of saved data. ( Source side )

The backup uses the same names.

So its like looking at a silo on the left - my PC and the right the backup data; showing the total size of each section ( data type like emails or documents or videos etc. ) backed up and the space left unused.

I see no options on the source or backup sides to rename or change those names in the WD software ???

So, how do I do that then ??? Thanks …

You need to go to “This PC” you will see the external drive there, open it and you should have a “WDSmartware.swstor” folder, once you open this folder you will see another folder which should have the name of the computer, right click it and rename it. Once that’s done, just create your backup as you normally would.
