How to connect wd my cloud directly to my win7 computer without any router?

Hello,

I have just bought a wd my cloud 2tb HDD but i don’t have any router for now but i have to connect it to my win7 laptop via ethernet cable.

Is there any way?

Best regards.

Can you connect the My Cloud’s ethernet port direct to your computer’s Ethernet port? Yes, but it is not recomended because one will typically loose network access to the My Cloud from other devices on the local network along with loose the ability to access the My Cloud remotely. Routers can be found for as little as $25 at Amazon.com and even cheaper at second hand stores (or even free from friends or family). Typically one’s broadband provider will also offer up a router or gateway that has networking ports on it.

When you connect the My Cloud direct to your computer you will have to wait for the My Cloud’s front LED to turn blue. It may take a few minutes. Typically when a network device cannot obtain an IP Address it will default to an IP address in the 169.254.x.x range. You may need to use a program like WD Access which can be downloaded/installed from the WD Support Downloads page (http://support.wdc.com/downloads.aspx) to find the My Cloud.

Dear Bennor,

No one gonna use wd my cloud, only me. I have installed WD access but still there is not any icon of wd my clound in my network area.

Ihave clicked reset button during 4 second then I have set up my ethernet card ip adres as 169.254.2.2. Subnet mask 255.255.0.0 but still not connected.

Btw. my clouds led is constant blue.

Do not set an IP address for the network card on your computer. The card should default to an ip address in the 169.254.x.x range automatically.

You can also try issuing, if using Windows, the arp -a which should show all devices your computer can find on the network, look for the MAC address of the My Cloud (located on the bottom of the My Cloud) and its corresponding IP address… Also temporarily disable any other network ports (like WiFi) other than the networking port you have connected the My Cloud too.

The card should default to an ip address in the 169.254.x.x range automatically.
How?

There isn’t my cloud’s mac adres on arp -a results.

When the WD Access program is installed one can right click on the WD icon in the task bar area and if the My Cloud drive is found, it will display its name (default is My Cloud) and allow you to access the My Cloud.

Have you tried connecting to the My Cloud Dashboard using your web browser?

Wd access can’t find my cloud when it’s led is constant blue.

I have tried connecting to the My Cloud Dashboard using my web browser but failed.

You will need to check your network settings on your PC to ensure NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled and the network adapter is not configured for a static IP. And you may need to perform a 4 second reset on the My Cloud to reset the DHCP to default of Auto and reset the Administrator password to default of blank.

On my Windows 10 PC when the My Cloud is directly connected to the PC the My Cloud auto signed itself an IP Address of 169.254.10.56 and the Windows 10 PC auto assigned itself an IP Address of 169.254.7.203. Both using a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0. The My Cloud shows up when issuing an arp -a command and can be reached via a web browser.

NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled.
Network adapter is not configured for a static IP.
Performed 4 seconds reset.
Below you can see my detailed network settings.

Disable your Wireless connection on that PC and see if that changes anything. The ARP command you issued is showing all adapters (three of them) having a 192.x IP address. That would appear to indicate that the wired adapter is possibly getting an IP address assigned to it by the wireless network connection. If you click on the Details button on the local area connection setup screen for the wired connection it will list a bunch of details including IP address and DNS servers (see my Network Connection Details screen capture above).

Also check that the “network location” is set to Home or Private and not Public.

Disabling my wireless connection is not changed anything. My network location is set to home but it’s my wireless network, i don’t have any wired connection.

Can you send me a ss from your “network and sharing center” (just like same as above) when your wd my cloud is directly connected to your pc.

Finally i have solved the problem with remove hot spot shield routing drivers click just like below:

@Bennor, thank you very much for your effort. You are very helpful.

Good to see you figure out the problem.
