How to connect G-Studio Thunderbolt to Firewire 800 to old iMac?

(I really hate all these changing/upgrading connector technologies…)

I’m trying to connect a G-Studio, which only has Thunderbolt connectors, to my old iMac (OS X 10.6.8), which has Firewire 400 & 800 connectors. I have a Firewire to Thunderbolt connector and I plugged everything together but the iMac can’t seem to mount the drive. I tried Apple’s Disk Utility which is usually pretty good, but it doesn’t see the drive.

I wanted to try the G-Technology Assistant application but it requires OS X 10.9 or later, but I’m on an old iMac at 10.6.8 which I believe can’t be upgraded. It seems too bad that the app can’t be made to run under older OS X.

My next step is to go and buy a Thunderbolt to USB connector and hope that works.

Many thanks in advance for any help.
