How to change OS?

Hello there,
I bought a MyCloudEX2Ultra few months ago. Unfortunately it sʞɔns hard.

I’ve two options:

  1. I can try to sell it on ebay and look for another NAS
  2. I can try to change OS.

I found online the firmwares of @Fox_exe (thanks mate!) https://fox-exe.ru/WDMyCloud/WDMyCloud-Ex2-Ultra/ but I’ve few questions about them, before to pull the trigger.

  1. What happens to my file? I already have 2TB of files on my NAS. Should I Backup them (gosh) before the flash?
  2. There is no DSM6 for MyCloudEX2Ultra, could I use the one for WDMyCloud-Mirror-Gen2 ( fox_exe says that is the same device) ?
  3. How do I know that these firmwares are not calling home or doing ʇ ı ɥ s with my connection?

Thanks

Messing around with a non-WD OS may be more trouble than it’s worth, given the time it will take, not just installing, but ongoing. I’d cut it loose now and see what you can recover on eBay. Devices like this often sell for 20% or so under retail, not too bad.

Do you have OS5 installed on the EX2 Ultra? If not, update it immediately (you may be too late already) if yes, and you still don’t like it, sell it and buy a Synology.

What kind of functions are you trying to get out of your EX2?

I’m trying revolutionary things, like to run time machine at human speed, to use the cloud functionality, to run shell scripts, to sync with Google drive…

Might want to look into TrueNAS

Minimum 16GB of ram…

I think OpenMediaVault would be more appropriate for Consumer level NAS setups.
