How to add password protection and encryption to my older MBook Essentials

I Purchased a WD MyBook Elite. It includes the software WD Smartdrive to activate a password (and other settings). My older MyBook Essential drives do not have this option. I want to add it but how. I am using a Mac and these older drives have been formatted for Windows PC.
