Can someone tell me EXACTLY what WDalign does and how it does it?

The WD Align utility enables older operating systems to operate at full performance on Advanced Format hard drives.

So what does it do to enable this? Does it rewrite the entire disc with smaller sectors? Alter the driver to fool the O/S and the apps? What actions does it take?
