How do you view the files on hard drive?

I have a portable WD hard drive. My computer recently stopped working so I want to view the files on the hard drive. There are countless zip files and I was wondering if there was some software or way to find files without haivng to completely restore from the hard drive to my new computer. Thanks

How were the files put on the portable drive? Many ZIP files sounds like Windows 7 backup. The contents of the files can be viewed, but it can be a tedious process.
