How Do You Decide Between an HDD and SSD for Everyday Storage?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking at upgrading storage for a desktop system and wanted to hear how others decide between an HDD and SSD.

For general use, what factors do you consider most important—capacity, speed, reliability, workload, or price?

I’m also curious whether people prefer using an SSD for the operating system and applications while keeping an HDD for larger files, backups, or media storage.

What setup has worked best for you, and are there any things you would recommend checking before choosing a drive?

Thanks for sharing your experience.

That seems to be the prevailing wisdom.

I use everything you have mention in making my decision. I upgrade my computers when I need to.
My current desktop and main computer has a SSD for the operating system and an HDD for storage. Both are two terabytes.

Prices for both hard disks and SSD alike have jumped due to the AI nonsense

So far I have not had problems with any of my WD disks or SSD

HDDs have moving parts so they can be noticeably louder and warmer, while SSDs are silent and generally use less power. Before choosing, also check the motherboard’s available SATA or M.2 slots and make sure the drive’s interface matches. For most people, an SSD for Windows and everyday apps plus a larger HDD for media and less frequently accessed files is still a practical setup, but I’d keep important files backed up separately rather than relying on either drive alone.

For general use, speed, storage, and price are my main tipping points. Putting the OS and apps on a fast SSD greatly improves performance—everything opens instantly. I recommend a hybrid setup: a 1TB SSD for the OS and daily apps, plus a 4TB HDD for larger files, backups, or media storage. It offers speed where needed and cheap capacity for other storage. Check your motherboard for available slots and ensure your power supply has a SATA cable if adding a 3.5-inch HDD. Hope this helps with your upgrade!
