How do I know if My Book Home is working?

Without running WD Anywhere Backup is there a way to know if My Book is working properly?  When is the light suppose to move up and down?  After the initial backup is made when will the My Book update the changes and new files added to the laptop files?  Is it necessary to restart my laptop to make My Book perform backups?  I leave my laptop on for months without restarting it.

I am running an older HP laptop with Win7.  The software has version 4.00.5484 installed and says there are no updates available.

Copy some files to My Book Home and check My Book Home if files are copied.

When there is read or write activity.

After the initial backup is made when will the My Book update the changes and new files added to the laptop files? 

Whenever new file is shown up on your source drive (system drive) by adding or updated.
