Hooking up with my hi-fi

Can anyone explain me how to hook up WDTV with my hi fi stereo system? I know it should be possible, i just need to know which aditional cables to buy… and stuff. Already have my old DVD hooked up with the said hi fi. Would be easy simply reconnecting the pins, but WDTV doesn’t have sepperate R and Y inputs on the back. Sorry for not using the correct terminology.

The image would still go through HDMI to my TV obviously, and sound would go sepperately through AV or Y/PB/PR inputs? I’d really appreciate any help.

I have mine hooked to my Amplifier using a toslink (optical) cable and it works fine.  You need to get into the settings though and select Optical as your connection method. It is all on page 171 of the WDTV Live SMP User Manual which you download from Western Digital.

Y / Pb / Pr are component VIDEO.

The audio outputs are Left / Right and are RED and WHITE.

What i actually want is connect WDTV with my stereo system through composite cables. My stereo system is quite far from the TV. I don’t know which additional cables i need to buy and how to hook it up. Nothing too fancy i just want to use it for parties and stuff.

Composite is also just video.

You just need to use the RED / WHITE cable.   You don’t need the yellow cable.

But given that, how to you expect to control it if you can’t see the TV?

Yeah i know i only need red and white cable.

I think i figured it out. This should help.

Image/video would go through HDMI obviously. If i can set it up that way so sound goes through composite and image through hdmi. I’ve set up my PS3 similarly. Still haven’t received my WDTV so i can only guess if the pin will fit then my problem is solved.

I need a simple solution. As i said my only problem is that WDTV SMP doesn’t have the inputs for red and white on the back, like my old DVD player. I just need some adapter for the inputs.

Here  pinout.

Here is what you need to buy to lengthen the cable that came with the player.

This conventional picture, to show the SMP’s connector pinout.
I could not find such a cable. Therefore, i’m using an extension cable.
I tried the same cable for camcorder, but it have the middle ring as the ground so it does not work.

I think i’ve finally found my solution.

It has the exact same pin as WDTV and red/white/yellow inputs.

It will not work.

Quote from eBay:

“This adapter is only suitable for devices where the ground is the 2nd connector from the base (3rd from tip). Some devices are setup to have the ground at the tip or at the base. Please check with your manufacturer first. For example, Ipod AV cables use the tip for their ground”.

For you need:  where the ground is the 1st connector from the base (4th from tip)

PS: I’m just curious. Why don’t you take my advice at once?

Bro i appreciate your help but you didn’t explain all that much apart from posting the 2 pictures. Not much of an advice. What am i supposed to do with all those cables you posted and how to hook em up?

And your posts are kinda hard to follow i was being polite cause you’re trying to help.

Need to buy a cable that’s the right length.  2 x RCA Phono Extension Left Right M-F Audio Cable

Combine it with the cable that came with the player.

Connect to the HI-FI amplifier.

Ok much clearer now. Thanks. Will try it when my WDTV arrives.

Not sure if I am qualified to jump in, but I hooked up my WDTV with my wifi using the composite cable that came with it (purchased in Europe). I just plugged an RCA cable into the red&white channels leaving the 3rd one empty. The other side of my cable goes into my powered speakers; you could use any RCA cable that goes into your hifi on one end with red & white plugs on the WDTVs end.

Not sure why you are posting this link. I just wanted to re-confirm how it works, at least for me. These RCA cables that I connected to the composite and my speaker system are available in various lengths depnding on one’s need.
