Hook up WD5000ABYS externally with adapter cable?

My old Dell Optiplex GX 620 computer died - I think. Or the WD5000ABYS drive died - I don’t know. I would like to read and transfer the data from the old drive by connecting it to my new HP Z230 computer using a SATA to USB3 conection. Can this be done? And what cable would be best? Is there an easy way to test the HDD externally to see if it has mechanical problems, etc?

Hi @BadC0mputer,

We would suggest installing the drive in a Windows computer as a secondary drive and testing using WD Dashboard.

For 3.5" Inch Hard drives … you need a Powered USB Enclosure or USB Dock

2.5" Inch Hard drives require no external power … 3.5" Inch ones do.
