Here's an idea

One thing for sure this software MUST be rewritten.

But here’s a comparison and a couple of ideas.

PROS:

Here are the features I like about WD Smartware :

  • device temperature (my apartment and the lab I work at get quite hot in the summer);

  • % of usage and the capacity gauge (no clicking, just one glance or mouse-over)

  • 256 bit encryption and lock drive;

CONS:

Well they must have been said a dozen times already on this board: bloatware (just horrible performances compared to other FREE software), no real system image or recovery (anyway windows does this quite well) and recording and retrieving of multiple file versions (is extremely slow). That last feature is destined for office use anyway… Where there will probably be a faster and more reliable program for that…

IDEAS:

Make a firmware/software update where:

a) you have a new software with only the basic features (PROS)

or

b) a WD Smartware update where you can switch on and off the file backup part and keep the basics features (PROS)

P.S…: For God’s sake…If Microsoft can pull it off and offer a security package that runs without barely noticing it (Microsoft security essentials) I don’t see why a drive manager should take up 100 Mb of RAM…

Your post sounds more like an Idea or a Feature Request. The best place for this is in our Ideas Lab. This way someone from WD will be sure to see it. However, I would search first and make sure that there isn’t another idea similar to yours that you could add your post to and vote on.
