Help with partitioning

I just purchased a 2TB external My Book. I would like to set up 2 partitioned drives (one for her backups and one for mine). I would also like to password protect each partition with its own password. Any suggestions.

Hi Drunkle, you can lock the My Book with password protection but not individual partitions. Check the link below for the steps to format it.

Thanks for the reply! One other quick question, about partitioning. My wife uses a Windows 7 machine and mine is Windows Vista (it just crashed and might turn into a Linux box if I can’t resurect Vista). Am I correct in assuming that because each OS, including Linux, uses the same file system that if I create the partitions on a Windows 7 box, the other OSes won’t have any trouble reading/writing to it?

That’s correct, as long as the file system is compatible, the OS wont have any problems reading it.

When I partition the drive, will I have to move the system files off of the external onto my laptop first? I don’t want the partitioning to wipe those.

You can use the shrink option from the disk management window, to create a new partition from the available free space, you don’t need to move your files. Check the links below for the steps.
