HELP! My book essential application error

 first of all i am not tech savy.  i have a my book essential and a compaq presario (few years old) running xp sp3.  when i hook up my hard drive it says it recognizes it but then pops up an application error process id=0x154 (340) thread id=0x1f8 (504).  i have updated firmware and vcd?.  need any help you can send my way.  tried googling it and searching and nothing.  thanks
