Having to quit EVERY running application before ejecting MyPassport SSD

I use a 256Gb MyPassport SSD on 2 different macs. One without any problems: used for design work I quit any adobe apps, eject the disk, and go on my way.

Back at home and after working on the same files it’s not enough quitting adobe apps, Finder keeps naming app after app I need to quit before it will eject the disk - most recently even Messages and Contacts (!).

Really inconvenient having to shut everything before i can eject - why is the SSD all over my machine?
