Harddrive fail

I usually buy Maxtor or Seagate drives, but 3 years ago I decided to buy a Western digital USB drive 2TB.

This has now failed on me. Following a suggestion from the WD help line, I removed the case to find the standard Sata hardrive, removed the external  attachment so I could plug in to the standard cables. Still no good.

I tried the diagnostic programs and even tried a dos format to try and cure the problem.

The drive light was flashing, but no response. On further examination I found that the drive has jammed, where the axle was either not fitted correctly in the first place or there was no lubrication on the factory build.

I have been using Maxtor and Seagate for about 15 years with the only trouble being a low level format when I picked up a root virus  (stayed in first 255 bytes of hardrive- normal format would not remove it.).

Fortunatly I do regular backups ( not to this drive) and my data is safe.

When it was running it worked well.

Sorry I will not be buying any more WD drives.
