Hard Drive failure?

I was defragmenting my Passport WD2500ME and it lost the connection during the defrag. Now, the computer doesn’t recognize it and I’m not able to access any information. Did I kill it? I’ve tried everything I know to get it to reconnect. Any advice will help. Thanks!
