Hard disk access noise

Hi all,

I just bought the DL2100 and additionally two new REDs 3TB each (RAID 1 configuration).

NAS is really quiet idle, however every time I access files (read/write/stream) there is a ton of noise caused by the hard disks. Is this normal?

I also have an external disk on the USB port. Absolutely quiet even during access. But the REDs spin and work even when I stream off the external HD.

Seems to be somthing wrong :frowning:

What is your experience?

Thanks in advance!

Jimmy

Hello There, welcome to the community.

Is there anyway that you can record a clip and share the sound? This way we know what can of sound is the drive making and we can help you better.

There can be quite a bit of “sound” when the disks are active, because they often are doing something.  On the otherhand “noise” is another matter, so are you sure you are confusling one with the other?  Anyway, if a disk WAS noisy, I would not expect the other to be so.  the sound of both should be about the same.

Yes I can and I will. Good idea!

I will upload the file next week when I have my audio recorder back.

Hey Mike,

I am talking about regular access and seek sound/noise. No weird other sounds.

However, I think the hard disks are way too loud! (WD REDs expected to be quiet).

I have a lot of old external and internal hard drives - not one is nearly as loud as my new REDs.

Maybe I’m spoiled from my SSDs, I don’t know. But seriously, the DL2100 should work pretty silent, regardless of file transfers, streaming, etc. Could also be a problem of the whole NAS construction, I don’t know.

Is there any hardware/software setting for “automatic acoustic management” for the HDs or the NAS system?

Thank you!
