Getting backed up material off overcrowded WD Elements Desktop

My 3TB Elements HD has become like a black hole. It’s very difficult if not impossible to extract any of the contents of numerous back-ups, although if I leave it connected to my desktop long enough, I can see the subheadings of what is actually contained in the back-ups. Unfortunately I probably overfilled the hard drive, which only has 256 gb of space left on it, so that could be the problem. (All the contents are more than four years old now). I am wondering if a solution might be to get a 4tB hard drive and try to move the contents on to that. Or any other solutions? Thanks.
