Freezing

I have contacted WD to try and get help to deal with the problems I am having with my passport but have had useless responses and am beginning to get really annoyed!!

I purchased it back in 2009 and. I was planning to use it to store my uni work on for easy transfer from uni computers to my laptop at home. I really can’t remember what I did, but I obviously managed to store some files onto it and they appear when I open the drive in “autoplay”. I remember taking it to the computers in Uni and trying to open it when prompted to from “autoplay”, but the “my computer” folder and  the open “my passport” folder completely froze. This kept happening at home and at Uni. I decided to leave it and went back to using a PEN drive. I’m now sick of using PENs for work as they have limited memory and ideally i’d like everything on one drive, but I am having the same problems!! Even with the brand new laptop I’ve just bought!

I contacted WD who gave me a link to download some software that would check to see if the drive is “healthy” (personally I don’t understand why it wouldn’t be as I’ve only ever used it once!!!) but everytime I try to run the “quick test” it says it takes an estimated 5mins- and 25 mins later i’m sitting with it frozen just 3 bars from finishing! This has happened 4 times.

I don’t understand what’s going on and I’m getting really really REALLY irate about it!!

Please can anyone suggest what is going on?

Hi there, if I were you I’d try a firmware update first and then check the drive for errors in case it needs to be replaced/////

Hello Nataieb87, I have escalated your case, please look at your private message for more information.

I’m not sure what that means, do i just google firmware and download it? With my drive plugged in? I’m not sure i’ll be able to get it replaced as i dont have a reciept just my Amazon history which has despatch date etc on it.

Thanks for your help.

Download the firmware from WD’s website, I don’t know what Passport you have so I’ll provide different links:

Passport Elite: http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/wdsmartwareupdate/Step1.asp?id=wdfMP_Elite&os=WIN

Passport Essential: http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/wdsmartwareupdate/Step1.asp?id=wdfMP_Essential&os=WIN

Passport Essential SE: http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/wdsmartwareupdate/Step1.asp?id=wdfMP_SEEssential&os=WIN

if your drive is under warranty then that’s all you’ll need to replace the drive as WD will not ask you for a receipt, you can check the warranty of your drive under this link, you’ll only need the serial number on the back:
