Free Recovery Software?

I have a WD 1TB Elements HD that windows no longer recognizes.
After plugging it into my PC, Windows says “Device Not Available. Parameter is Incorrect”
Chkdsk says its ‘RAW’ format.
It is in fact NTFS and using ‘M3 Data Recovery’, I was able to use ‘Data Recovery’ to see all the files on it, and recover 1 (ONE) file, before the software declared I had reached its 1GB limit (I had not) and that in order to continue using it, I would need to pay ~64$.

So…my question is: Is there a free alternative to M3 Data Recovery that will allow me to copy off the rest of these files?

I’ve tried Recuva & Puran but they are either for ‘deleted’ files, or they don’t recognize the drive either.

This are ‘nice to have files’ and definitely not work the price of another 1TB driver just to recover.
However, I do have a good deal of free time, and lots (30+ years) of IT job experience to not be afraid to tinker and bit-twiddle.

Any suggestions on some free software to try?

Thanks!

don’t limit yourself to Windows/Mac software, try some Linux data recovery software … a lot of it is free under GNU Public License.
