We went through each step for formatting our WD My Passoprt Essential SE USB 3.0 on our Mac (OSX) ~ got to the very last step, clicked on “partition” and immedicately got a message saying an error had occured, “could not unmount disc”. Any suggestions?
Did you add the USB 3.0 with a card? I don’t know much about Macs but in Windows the 3.0 addon cards are sometimes the problem.

Happens 7/10 times on Macs with random drives when there is an open (Hidden process) having access to the drive, just restart your Mac and try again, and if you still have problems then use the installation disc/bootable USB (Lion) of your Mac and format the drive like if you were going to install OSX on the drive (Failproof).
