You will NOT lose any of your data on MPW if you follow the instructions for restore . I have had to do it once or twice already; no problems. The basic core of instructions are from WD, I just embellished them with all the ifs, ands, and buts. Like saying to have it ON, a few times, just in case somebody doesn’t get it!

I guess the gremlins were at work. I powered on MPW in preparation for the restore to see the same sequence of flashing, as expected. I’ve previously let the lights flash for a while to see if the device might somehow recover, but figured that was unlikely, and those times it didn’t. After powering on, I scanned your directions and as I was about to press the power button, the power LED changed from Red to Green, and the wireless started flashing white for quite a while, and then turned blue. No clue what prompted this. I powered off and then on again to see what would happen and it started normally. It’s a mystery. Better lucky than good, I guess. Thanks for you help.

So, John, if I understand what you say here, you DID do the restore, after a lot of LED flashing of different colors during the time it was restoring, it settled down after a few minutes, the blue power and wireless LEDs came on, both Blue (if battery was fully charged) and all is well now I hope so. It does take quite a while, so maybe I need to add that to the instructions.

Actually no. The same sequence leading to the repetition of a solid red flash followed by 3 shorter flashes occurred. While I was scrolling to and rereading your directions (a few minutes) it changed to the eventual green battery/blue wireless (correct) state. In previous attempts, I allowed the red flashing sequence to run much longer than this, so it’s not that I didn’t give it enough time in previous attempts. The only thing that changed was that before the ‘success’ I reconnected it to my PC and downloaded the files to another drive just as an added precaution and in preparation for the restore. Upon properly ‘ejecting’ it from the PC and removing the USB, it reverted to the red flashing sequence. A day or so later the ‘success’ occurred. I can’t explain it, so you probably want to file this away as an outlier rather than adding it your instructions.

John, thanks for the feedback, I almost missed seeing it (buried in tons of forum replies.
Can’t see why “success” took so long to happen; it should have happened right away. I know you are happy to have it working, but you need to check and see if the current firmware is still install, and if not do a firmware update. Also if it was me, I would go through a restore one more time to have it go smoothly. I realize this does not sound like fun, but a few weeks ago I did this 4 or 5 times to my MPW, just to help another member with problems, and I was writing down the steps he should see happen. It did not hurt my MPW one bit to do this.
