Files disappear how to recover?

Some move files are disappearing from my 2TB ext drive.

Sometime the file is changed into a directory with same name but 0 length.

My wild guess would be that a bit, byte, track or sector has done bad. Don’t know though.

What is causing this?

How to recover?

Would Spin-Rite utility recover the files?

Are there WD utilities, that work, that might help recover files?
