File does not load

ok, here is my problem. when i click on a file to play. i see a yellow round arrow (like it says i am working on it) but then nothing happens. the movie does not start. it started today, nothing changed since yesterday. any idea what may have happened?

just to give you more info. it does not play anything, even the sample files that came with the device. no error message, nothing. just a spinning yellow arror, and nothing happens.

i am with the latest firmware, try rebooting etc… should i return it back?

Try resetting by pressing the side paperclip button for a couple of seconds and then releasing with the unit fully booted up. Try playing the sample files now. Its likely that you have played a ‘bad’ file and this has hung up the WDTV. When the unit gets in this state it will not play any file.

thx alot. you are right. i reseted and now it works however if itry to play wmv file, it becomes bad again. i didnt know  this device did not support wmv?  is that the case or is there a way to play wmv files? this is not a drm’ed file, not sure why it is not working

It’s depends what video streams are IN any particular file, whether it’s playable or not.

You can essentially throw any video stream and any audio audio stream into a video file.

The WDTV only supports extracting streams from certain containers… and only supports certain settings for what streams can be played.

I can make a file (whether .avi, .mpg, .mkv, .wmv, .mp4, or whatever) that is unplayable on EVERY hardware player and EVERY software player, simply by creating a stream format that there is no support for.

hmm ok for an illetarate guy like me, can you  a bit simplify? :)  is there a way i can play these files?

Go to http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en/Download and download the proper version of MediaInfo for your operating system.

Run the program and get the “Text” ouput for the file that won’t play.

It will look something like this:

Post the MediaInfo for the file(s) that are not playing properly.

It does support wmv but only wmv9/vc-1. You probably have an older wmv file with a different codec. If you post the mediainfo then all will be revealed.

For the first one, WMV8 video isn’t supported by the chip inside the WDTV.

For the second one, only up to 30fps are supported for 1920x1080 with VC1.

Both of those files would have to be reencoded into something the device supports for them to be playable.

ok thank you very much for the help

I encountered same trouble and i have files similar to second one. but with 29.9fps but WDTV would still not play the file.

Post the Text output from MediaInfo for the file that won’t play.

Um… according to the header that MediaInfo (and the WDTV) sees, there’s no valid video stream in the file.  How did you encode it?

i did not encode instead i downloaded. Its plays well at PC

It looks like a strange pirate encode.
