I have been using one of these for a while, and had this sort of difficulty with the last.
I activate it, and it downloads a quantity of material, but never gest to stop - it gets to 7.13 of a 7.14 GB download and then keeps on running - never stopping. In the end I have to turn it off.
On checking the download I find it has never downloaded some 500+ new photos.
Has anyone any advice and/or solution?

It will never stop unless you stop it
the software is designed to do a continues backup
You can pause and start the backup when is convenient for you
