External Hard Drive not found

I inherited a WD TV Live Streaming Media Player (probably generation 1) a couple of years ago. The external USB HD I was using got corrupted and I had to starting using another one, but the media player doesn’t recognise anything is attached. I have tried two other external drives and neither was recognised, but I can attach a small USB flash drive and it works, but it stores next to nothing so not a good solution.
Is the capacity of the External HD too big for the Media Player to process?
Or is it a USB2/USB3 thing?
Tried both USB ports.
Using NTFS formatting.
Tried to upgrade firmware manually, but it wouldn’t work. Couldn’t do it direct either.
I’m not very technical so not sure what all this means. I’m happy to buy a new drive, but want to be sure that it will be compatible and work. Any advice?

@rosemount What external drives are you trying to use and are they WD devices?

Thank you for commenting.
At the moment a Dynamode Storage SCSI 164GB in NTFS format, 3.0USB, but not recognised.
Also tried WD Elements 1023 750GB, 3.0USB. I have tried this in various formats (currently exFAT), but not recognised.
