External hard drive is not responding

I have this hard drive for years. Always working fine. I had some contents on this hard drive and I was travelling overseas. This hard drive was in my cabin bag. After the travel, around 36 hours, when i tried to access it from my laptop-it’s not responding. Could you please help me.

Part of the travel - around 8+ hours was in train and I had around 1+ hours of cab ride also. I am not aware whether this drive was subject to some extreme fall or turbulence. Anybody else faced this kind of issue? If the drive is not responding - what it means - it’s dead and content can be retrieved or what?

It’s an external portable hard drive which is connected to computer or laptop via USB drive.

Do you have a My Cloud device? You have posted to the My Cloud subforum. The My Cloud devices are not an external USB hard drive they are network attached storage devices. What specific WD device (and model) do you have?

Without knowing or doing additional troubleshooting steps on an external USB hard drive it’s hard to diagnose exactly what is wrong with it. If making any sort of grinding or repetitive clicking noise that is a sure sign of a failing or dead hard drive.

One troubleshooting step, if using Windows OS, is to ensure the drive is being seen by the Windows operating system. Check the Windows Computer Management program’s Disk Management section to ensure the drive has a Drive Letter assigned. If one isn’t assigned one can use the Drive Management to assign one. Windows File Explorer won’t see the drive without a drive letter assigned.

Generally when traveling with a hard drive it is best to ensure it is secured well and protected from impacts/jolts as best as possible and that you carry it in your carry on baggage to prevent impacts and jarring to it by airport personal.
