External hard drive for desktop PC

Hello, I want to get an external hard drive to make backups for my desktop PC but I’ve been reading that external hard drives only work with laptops. Is this true? I am running Vista as my os and have USB 2.0 Thanks

Not true they work with both. I would get a powered drive rather than a USB powered drive. If you are not interested in the Smartware that WD has for backups I would go with a plain drive like Elements. It’s simple plug and play nothing to install expet the driver. You didn’t mention how you intended to backup.

Hey Joe thanks for the reply.

After considering all my options and my budget, I went with the WD Elements. I like the simplicity, the affordability, and it looks good. I just backed up my desktop a few hours ago and it worked flawlessly.
