External drive ejected by IMac and keeps running

Hi everyone,
I have a 3TB My book external drive that was ejected randomly during use. I cannot see it in Finder or Disk Utility. I still hear it running and am wondering what to do that is safest: unplug USB cable? Power? Power button?

Using IMac with El Capitan
HELP!

Hi zag,

It’s always a good idea to safely eject the external drive using safe eject feature on the host device and then unplug the USB cable after which you can safely turn off the drive. We placed a link below for more information.

Hi and thanks for your feedback, however the drive is being ejected by my computer on its own when I am copying/transferring a large amount of files. Faulty drive seems like a logical explanation. Will bring it to a specialist to safely copy my data
