Ext Drive really, really slow & strange display

New to the community. I have the WD My Book Home Edition, ‘WD150001CS-00’, 1.5TB. I bought it in 2010 to use primarily for my Time Machine back ups from my iMac. I have only used the FireWire connection, besides backing up was not an issue, then. The LED indicator on the front starts at the bottom goes up to the top then snaps back down to the bottom. This whole process takes about 3-4 seconds, then it just repeats. Eventually, it will stop doing this cycle. Also, my file folders can be seen but I cannot see the files in the folder. And since I have it connected to a Mac, I did not see a WD diagnostic tool for download. Currently, (at the time of this post) I am using the Disk Utility application to verify if the data is corrupted; it’s saying the estimated time will be 5 days, 19 hours! (:-o)  If it is, I will try the ‘Repair Disk’ function. I would like to know if I can replace the hard drive myself, especially since it is out of warranty?

Hello tyes_macs,

It’s good that you are testing the drive with the disk utility. Depending on the results you should be able to use the drive. Most of the time the repair option will fix the corrupted area and you will be able to kee using the drive.

Now, if you need to replace the drive, I’ll recommend you to look for the same kind of unit as the one inside.

Thanks Help4All. The disk utility said “the volume appears to be good.” Upon seeing that, I closed the utility and commenced to start a back up (especially since it’s been 18 mos. that my last back up was successfully completed). I started the back up with no issues but since I started the back up (as I enter this post), it has only backed up 11 GB of 423 GB and its been running for about 36 hours. I kinda figure that it will be only looking for any changes but it shouldn’t take this long. My iMac is 2008 model with 2.8 Intel Core 2 Duo with 6GB RAM and roughly 423 GB of a 1.5 TB HDD. I keep it in pretty good shape and maintain it pretty regularly. I think that even though it says the drive is fine, by it’s speed, I think it is on it’s last leg. Anyone?
