EX2100 - What's the max Hard Drive support for this model

Hi,

I have the EX2100. I have it for a few years already, it is running fine with 2 x 4TB harddrive in it.
It use it mainly for file and photos backup from desktop and phone. I know this is an old model. I’d like to know what’s the max HD size if I want to upgrade the capacity. It seems that the EX4100 can have around 12 TB per drive with the new update… I am not sure if the EX2100 can go as high as 12TB or even higher at 16 TB per drive.

Thanks in advance.

Hi @xindao,

Have you opened a Support Case? If not opened, for more information, please contact the WD Technical Support team for the best assistance and troubleshooting:

I had the same question with the same model MyCloud EX2100 (mine came pre-loaded with 12 TB [6TB + 6TB]). I actually accidentally contacted WD Support twice (2019 and 2025) and here’s what they said:

  1. In Oct 2019 they said "please be informed that the WD EX2100, maximum capacity is defined by 12TB that is 6 primary+6 secondary and we have not tested it with more than 12TB, however, you can try to increase the capacity size of the drive-by replacing both old drives with the new high capacity drives. Please refer to the below-mentioned link to upgrade the drive:

How to Upgrade the drives on a My Cloud Device

It is also recommended to backup your old data first after then put the two new high capacity hard drive and build a RAID 1 and once it would be done then only old data can be transferred to the new drive.
Please be informed that both new drives must be of the same kind of configurations and capacity; Different capacity drives data can not be copied through NAS. NAS does not support the exFAT file system."

I never got around to test this and totally forgot I had inquired about this, hence I contacted them again and here’s what they responded this time:
2) Jan 2025 (also why I came accross this post). "My Cloud EX2100 can hold up-to 16TB of storage (2 X 8TB), 8 TB drive in one slot. You may also refer to the below mentioned article:

My Cloud Hard Drive Compatibility Matrix
"

Notice in the matrix webpage when you click on the EX2100 you will see that it shows it can handle the following max HDD:
WD Red ( WD80EFZX-68UW8N0) 8 TB

This is on my forever growing list of IT things to try and once I do, I’ll try to remember to post an update here. If anyone’s successfully tested a higher capacity HDD on this model, please let us know.

Hope this helps
