EX2 drive visible by Smartware only intermittently

Windows 8.1

Smartware 2.4.11

EX2 Firmware 1.05.36

No problem seeing and using the EX2 drive through any of the MyCloud functions.

Installed Smartware for the first time. Could see Dropbox and EX2 drive withuot a problem. Did first backup from laptop C: drive to newly-created share on EX2 drive. Completed without issue.

By checking the file dates in the backup directory on the EX2, I can see that the backup is still active.

However, when I now invoke Smartware, I can usually only see Dropbox. It behaves as expected. The EX2 drive rarely appears, and then only for 2-3 seconds. I can’t find any conditions which would make it appear.

It bears no relation to the state of other things that I can see. MyCloud always shows the EX2, even if I invoke it as soon as the EX2 appears in Smartware. And if MyCloud is running when the EX2 icon flashes up in Smartware, MyCloud is working as expected if I switch to it.

I’m out of ideas. Any suggestons?

Thanks …

Maybe how busy your network is, and/or the age of your router?

I started with a MyCloud Mirror connected up to an older router and Smartware had problems seeing it from various machines on wifi, but not from machines wired directly. Updating the router to a new one fixed it, although it (and my Pi) still sometimes don’t show up under Windows Explorer’s network tab unless I directly address the device to force it to be found.

Thanks, but no. New router, and the problem ahppens whether the network is busy or not.

Does connecting the laptop via ethernet cable rather than wifi make it appear properly?

Also if that doesn’t work, if you connect the EX2 directly to the ethernet port of the laptop make it appear correctly and repeatably under Smartware?

Normaly Ethernet-connnected.

However … for reasons I don’t understand, things have started working normally again. I’m not aware of having done anything to provoke a change one way or the other, but things are fine now.

Good news  Always nicer to know why of course, but sounds like one of those problems that evaporate when you look at them closely and get others also to do so (and unfortunately sometimes also to reappear when you stop).

I’d wonder about the wifi link between the router and the laptop, if there’s something causing it to slow down such as data transfer (or other stuff at a lower level that’s taking up the bandwidth). Cable-connecting curing it makes it sound like a speed issue though, with the EX2 detection timing out before it can be completed (similar to what happened on my old router with my MCM, as I said before).

Could be an issue with the laptop’s adapter speed, or even if something slow is connecting onto the wifi network and causing the router to slow down to accomodate it. If it recurs I’d see what else may be connected to your network by wifi at the time, and see if you can find a correlation.
