N00b here, if I erase my drive will the original contents, i.e. the drivers and WD software be erased as well ?

Yes, if you erase the drive then all goes with it, but if you ever need the files  (Smartware and drivers) then you can get them from WD’s website on this link:
SES drivers download and Smartware recovery
You can get the user manual from the “installation” section of your drive
