Elements Desktop suddenly not recognised

Gday,
My WD Elements Desktop suddenly stopped responding today. It is showing up in Device Manager as: 

“WD Ext HDD 1021 USB Device”

and as 

“Local Disk (G:)” in my computer as opposed to its usual “WD My Book”. 

The LED is constantly flashing aswell. It freezes any attempt to try and open it and once unplugged says the drive needs to be reformatted. Any Ideas?
