Each user a time machine back up file and limit

I BU two Macs to a MCEx2U The BU files are put in the TimeMachineBackups share which was already created on the NAS when it arrived. Can I move these already created Time Machine BU files to their respective Users so that I can limit the size of their back ups? How do I do this? I’ve tried from the Mac Finder, but they won’t move.
Thank you.

TimeMachine does not have any limitations so I suggest having a larger backup solution to handle multiple users

Thanks Vegan.

I’ve managed for 10 years with an Apple Time Capsule until it failed. I also felt the need for NAS services on my small domestic network. So I’m a new boy to NAS and MCEx2U, and reluctant to thrash around in the MCEX2U until I know more about it.

It’s not clear to me what the MCEx2U system software does in with the files pushed at it by the TM application.

I don’t want the TM BUs to take all the space on the drive. Also, one user has a larger machine so I want to give them different amounts of space for their BUs.
I see two possible ways to do this. 1) move the existing BU files in TimeMachineBackups to their respective ownerships as individual users; 2) switch off the TM auto backup, delete the existing BU files, and start the BU process afresh.

  1. sounds easy, but I don’t know how to move the files. I tried in Mac Finder, but they seem rooted to the spot in the TimeMachineBackups share. if I could do move the files, must I place them in shares for each user that use the exact same name (TimeMachineBackups)?
  2. is tedious as the initial BU takes an age, even over E’net. Can I simply create a folder in each user share called TimeMachineBackups?

Grateful for any help. I have of course searched the Help resources with no luck.

Look for Time Machine support with any NAS unit you are considering. Not all of them are Apple friendly.

Some Apple stores may be able to give you some recommendations

Cautionary Note: Mac OS 11.5 will not allow a full system restore from a WD My Cloud Time Machine. Individual files can be restored, however a full disk restore requires a Time Machine store on a local disk (e.g. USB).

Thanks kworden for caution.
It seems I spoke too soon. I tried creating a pseudo user to do the TM backup, allocating him only a part share of the MC and giving him access only to the TMBU share. This didn’t work as I couldn’t see how to log in as that user, so abandoned that and did a restore to start again.
Still seems crazy to me that WD don’t provide for the case of several machines making TM BUs, each having only limited MC space in line with their machine storage size, rather than just a crude overall limit on TMBU space.
